"Let's go for a colour walk mummy". It took me a few seconds to catch on to what the little Bowerbird was talking about. She has helped me find colours in the garden for previous colour themed posts, and has enjoyed the hunt. So much so, that on a very bleak, cold wintry day, she is dragging me outside with her gumboots on. Coincidentally, she was appropriately wearing, a floral purple dress. Every day there must be a hat and skirt or dress to finish off this little one's outfit. Before I have even finished rubbing my bleary eyes she has chosen her ensemble for the day, and is waiting patiently for me to help her put it on.
With icy fingers she plucks and peaks at all things purple. Purple pansies, African daisies, Purple Hibiscus, Hebe veronica, .... she races ahead "look mummy more purple", she points, I shoot. Her favourite is lavender, always a piece in her hand to squeeze and sniff.
We find purple veins on the purple sprouting broccoli and purple leaves on the purple brussel sprouts. We gather some food for the guinea pigs as we stroll. In the fairy garden a purple fish swims through wintry days, and a spotted purple chair is too wet to entice small bottoms. The purple bug catcher lies forgotten in a box, waiting for warmer days to awaken all the insects.
Back inside we snuggle by the fire under a purple blanket, lovingly knitted by my grandmother and fondly dubbed the Nanna blanky. Small children and pets are so good at forcing us out of our comfort zone.
It wasn't until I was inside that I though to photograph the violets.
The end of the winter school holidays today, I'll miss having our three Bowerbird chicks home to play with.

I used to have nightmares about the Umpa Lumpas. Are you a fan of the old Charlie and the Chocolate factory, or the new?
